Speaking

Talks about the people journalism overlooks

I speak to journalists, newsrooms, journalism schools, NGOs and festivals about how the choices behind a story decide who gets seen, and what changes when we report with care.

Every talk is built around who's in the room. I bring real stories from my own reporting and training, and leave people with something they can use in their work the next day.

01 / Talks

Three talks to start from

Built from my training and reporting work. Each one can be a talk, a panel contribution or a talk followed by a workshop, and I adapt the examples, length and depth to your audience.

Talk 01

Who gets to matter

Every story is a series of choices: who we call, whose words we quote, which photo we run. This talk looks at how those choices decide who an audience cares about, and what it costs the people left out.

For: newsrooms, journalism schools, media festivals

Talk 02

Beyond the victim

People affected by crisis are rarely only victims. They act, choose, organise and resist. This talk shows how to report on them as whole people, without looking away from what they've lived through.

For: journalists, NGOs, humanitarian and peacebuilding organisations

Talk 03

Problems and possibilities

Audiences turn away from news that only shows them what's broken. This talk is about reporting on responses too: rigorously, without cheerleading, so people come away informed and able to act.

For: newsrooms, journalism schools, foundations and funders

02 / Themes

Or something made for your event

These are the subjects I work on. Tell me what your audience needs and I'll build a talk, a panel contribution or a session around it.

  1. 01Representation, stereotypes and who gets left out of the story
  2. 02Solutions and constructive journalism
  3. 03Reporting on social conflict with complexity, not sides
  4. 04Refugees, minorities and Indigenous communities in the news
  5. 05How and why local news matters, even at international level
  6. 06News as common ground: how stories can bring people back together
  7. 07Journalism and social change
Have a topic in mind and wondering if I'm the right fit? Get in touch.

Questions you might have

Which languages do you speak in?

English, French and Spanish.

Where are you based?

I'm often on the move. Get in touch to see if I'm passing through your city soon, and if I'm not, maybe we can make it happen. I'm happy to speak online too.

What are your fees?

They depend on the format, the length and any travel. I adapt for non-profits, community organisations and small events, so please don't let budget stop you from asking.

Can you adapt a talk to our audience?

Always. Before the event, I'll ask you who'll be in the room and what you hope they leave with, and shape the talk around that.

How far ahead should we get in touch?

As early as you can, especially if travel is involved. Shorter notice is sometimes possible, so it's always worth asking.

06 / Invite me
